As the story builds to its inevitably tragic and bittersweet finale, the movie strikes a powerful emotional chord through an unflinching final scene. Sister Aimee takes this biography and runs with it, presenting Aimee (Julie White) as an exhausted soul saver looking to shake up her life. In real life, Aimee Semple McPherson was a complicated woman cycling through a bouquet of ill-fated marriages, she founded her own church, claimed to have been kidnapped in Mexico in 1926, and was charged with criminal conspiracy after investigators alleged she actually ran off with an ex-employee-turned-lover.
